These Board Policies Now Required for 990 Organizations

With its first major overhaul of not-for-profit reporting rules in 30 years, the IRS has made a significant redesign of its 2008 Form 990, Return of Organizations Exempt from Income Tax.

Part of the redesign includes adopting three Board policies that your regional association may, or may not have in place.

If your regional association has not yet adopted these three Board policies into your Policy (& Procedures) Manual, here are action steps to take as soon as possible:

  1. Customize the three “generic” attachments with your Regional Association name. (The attachments are from PPAI’s Policy Manual and approved by PPAI’s attorney.)
  2. Place the three board policies on the agenda of your next Board meeting for adoption.
  3. Include the adoption of the three policies within your Board meeting minutes.
  4. Add the three Board policies to your Regional Association’s Policy (& Procedure) manual so it is handy when filing IRS Form 990.

If you would like to do further research on the new 990 form, go to the IRS website (www.irs.gov and click on Charities and Non-profits) and www.nonprofitcenter.com where Bob Harris, CAE, shares a wealth of knowledge.
